It often seems that school students, and sometimes their teachers, are unclear about how mathematics and science are used in workplaces. Typically students are unaware of the wide range of occupations and professions in which some knowledge of mathematics or science (or both) are needed. It is important that students develop an awareness of the multiple ways in which both mathematics and science are used, and in what contexts, as this may have an influence on their approach to these important subjects (for example, in terms of attitude). It may also influence their career choices.
This issue is addressed by two important questions:
In our exploration of this issue we consider how mathematics and science are used in the world of work. However, in the latter sections of this domain we also consider how teachers can encourage students to study STEM subjects and include two tools relating to careers advice.
